Single mothers belonging to the disadvantage economic class are constantly at risk of becoming homeless. Since a significant number of these women do not have a college education they can find it difficult to find jobs that can provide family sized wages. A single mother who is likely to become homeless exposes her children to the risk of being neglected and abused. Studies have shown that children of single mothers belonging to the disadvantaged economic class tend to have behavioral problems and are at risk to end up in prison. Adequate training can help single mothers break the cycle of poverty and make the young family independent. This can have long term benefits for the family, as it has also been studied that a woman’s education level and the emphasis that she places on education of her children play a much more important role on her children than her marital status.
Helping women break out of their poverty can help in securing the future of both the mother and her children. Children whose mother can break out of poverty are less likely to display behavioral problems and school dropout. Some charities are working to help these women train and hold jobs. The life center of Hernando, founded by Lemoine, works with single mothers who are at risk of being homeless. They aim to provide home for single mothers where they learn parenting and job skills so that they can become self-sufficient as a young family. Recently the center was given a 816 square foot home that could serve as a home for single mothers where they would stay while learning job skills and parenting skills. The home needed a lot of renovation. The local community stepped to give as much as they could by way of services and products. A gala charity dinner was organized by one of the local restaurants that helped in raising money for the renovation work. Some work is still needed in the house but once its ready single mothers will be able to live with a house mother and learn job and parenting skills that can help them become self-sufficient in the future
